PhD student workshop on
Sustainability as part of academic research
Date: September 30, 2021, 9:00 – 15:00 CET
Venue: Zoom
Contact person: Simo Hostikka, Aalto University, simo.hostikka@aalto.fi
Role of sustainability and motivation
The importance of sustainability in all human activity is widely recognized. For many industries and professions, recognizing how sustainability relates to their actions is straightforward. For others, the sustainability (or lack thereof) of activities is not self-evident or easily measured. A student workshop on the topic of sustainability as part of academic research is organized to help students to define the role of sustainability in their own work.
Goal of the workshop
The goal of the workshop is to inspire participating PhD students to think on the role and meaning of sustainability on their own research work. For example:
- How do the anticipated results of the research advance sustainability?
- Are the chosen research methods sustainable?
After attending the workshop, the students can describe the sustainability benefits and consequences of their research for research communications and grant applications.
Workshop format and program
The format of the workshop is lecture+small group discussion. Participants form small working groups to discuss and think on the meaning and advancement of sustainability from the perspective of their own research work.
