Webinar: Fire safety of car parks

About the webinar:

Fire safety of car parks: Just a few days ago, a massive fire broke out in a parking garage in Shezen, China, and destroyed more than 1000 vehicles. Such large car park fires have occurred with increasing frequency also in Europe. The damages of such large fire are normally not limited to the vehicles but extend to the structure, which can suffer structural failures or even collapse as a result of the fire, as happened in the car parks at Stavanger Airport, in Norway, in January 2020, or at London Luton Airport, in UK, in October 2023. This seminar investigates possible causes and changes in the vehicles and in the car parks that can explain the increased frequency of such large fires and suggest countermeasures that could reduce the fire spread and the structural consequences.

In particular, the first presentation by Bjarne Husted will focus on “Simulation of fire spread in car parks and mitigation of the risk by using active protection system”. The presentation will focus on fire modelling and countermeasures, using the ELBAS project as a case study. The project and its experimental results have been presented previously, but this presentation will focus specifically on modelling the battery fire in the car and the subsequent fire spread to adjacent cars. Seven methods were used to control the fire, and simulations of some of these techniques will be shown during the presentation.

The second presentation by Luisa Giuliani will focus on “Design methods for structural fire safety of car parks”. The presentation will highlight the main shortcomings of current design methods, which are based on the assumptions of local design fires involving only few cars and often on overestimated values of the steel strength in fire. A statistical study based on existing Danish car fleet and car parks of greater Copenhagen area will be presented, which provides updated and more reliable values of the fuel load density and design fires to be used for structural design of car parks. Considerations on the resulting design, fire insulation, and possible optimization of the steel and insulation costs will also be given.
